When a president declares that the only limit on his power is his "own morality," he is not making a constitutional argument. He is rejecting constitutionalism itself. The founders constructed an elaborate system of checks and balances precisely because they understood that no person's internal moral compass could be trusted as the sole restraint on executive power. They had, after all, just finished dealing with a king and now we are dealing with a regime where Trump acts like a king.
