Visitation was held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Jordan Funeral Home. Funeral services followed the visitation at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Jordan Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Parkway Cemetery. Rev. Art Land and Rev. Jim McEachern officiated the services.

An Attala County man has been charged with second-degree murder and an enhanced charge for using a switch in connection with the death of a 19-year-old man in an act many are calling “senseless.”
Right before the clock struck 12 on New Year’s Day, Weir Police Chief Dillion Cates said Kentavious Merritt, 24, allegedly shot and killed Caden Yarbrough, 19, of Weir.
Merritt has been charged with second-degree murder and possession and/or use of a machine gun conversion device.

Mississippi is one of 15 states where SNAP costs will rise more than triple as a result of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, one analysis suggests.

Timely audits can alert state officials to potential financial emergencies at school districts such as the situation that spurred a takeover of Okolona schools in late October.
A third of Mississippi school districts are behind on submitting completed annual financial audits to the state Department of Education.
Without that information, state education officials are in the dark about current finances at 47 of Mississippi’s 138 public school districts, including any pending financial emergencies.
