With less than six weeks before the party primary election, political newcomer Sarah Adlakha is attempting to draw distinctions between herself and her opponent in the Republican Primary, incumbent U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.
Adlakha is selling herself as the outsider fighting against “entrenched political interests.” On Thursday, Adlakha said if elected, she would not accept money “from Washington lobbyists.”

Hospitals and health facilities in Mississippi are continuing to provide critical care to patients in the wake of a treacherous winter storm, even as they endure power outages, impassable roads and no running water.
Scott Simmons, Mississippi Emergency Management Authority’s external affairs director, said his agency is working to bring 30 generators to North Mississippi hospitals, long-term care facilities, nursing homes and warming centers. He said multiple locations had generators that failed over the weekend, and only some had come back online by Monday morning.

Robert “Bobby” Wesley Howell, Sr., 73, of Kosciusko, Mississippi, passed away on Sunday,
January 25, 2026, at his residence.
Bobby was born on January 3, 1953, in Kosciusko, Mississippi to Cecil Wesley Howell, Sr. and Alice Janette Frazier. He graduated high school in Sardis, Mississippi and was a member of Second Baptist Church. His career was primarily based on construction and asphalt work. He enjoyed working with cars, watching NASCAR and game shows, and spending time with his family.

IRS opens 2026 filing season

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today opened the 2026 tax filing season and began accepting and processing federal individual income tax returns for tax year 2025.
The IRS expects about 164 million individual tax returns for tax year 2025 to be filed ahead of the Wednesday, April 15, federal deadline. Taxpayers can find a range of tools and filing options on IRS.gov to help them prepare and file their returns.

Update on Severe Winter Weather
JACKSON, Miss. – Governor Tate Reeves announced that the state of Mississippi continues to work with county, state, federal, and private sector partners to respond to the severe winter weather impacting the state. Sadly, two additional deaths have been reported. One in Alcorn County and one in Leflore County. This brings the total to four statewide. Two injuries have also been confirmed.

John Carlyn White, 88, of Kosciusko, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and faithful servant of God. John’s legacy is one of deep faith, steadfast love for his family, hard work, and quiet strength.
Visitation will be held at Kosciusko First Baptist Church at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2026, with services to follow at 11:00 a.m. A family burial will follow at Parkway Cemetery.
