The congregation at Beth Israel must rebuild after an arsonist’s fire damaged large portions of the largest Jewish synagogue in Mississippi.
Jackson, Mississippi — Before the sun rose on Saturday, January 10, 2026, fire and billowing smoke spread through the Beth Israel synagogue. Fire crews responded to an emergency call after 3 a.m. After extinguishing the blaze, they determined it had been set by an arsonist.
Founded in 1860, Beth Israel is the capital city’s only synagogue. It is the largest Jewish house of worship in Mississippi.

ELLIOTT — Richard Earl Smith, age 59, of Elliott, formerly of Cascilla, passed away Sunday, January 11.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, at Elliott Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada.
He is survived by his wife, Myra Newcomb Smith of Elliott; father, Willard Earl Smith of Cascilla; three daughters, Melonie Smith McDonald of Grenada, Courtney Taylor of Southaven and Devan Williams of Elliott; two sisters, a brother, and three grandchildren.

He attended Sallis Baptist Church and worked for Cain Inc. as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
