Warm and pleasant greetings to all. We hope you enjoyed the Labor Day weekend and things are going well for you this week.
We were pleased to see Rose Sims’ niece Janice, who lives in California, and Rose’s sister-in-law Gertrude from Chicago. They both make visits several times during the year and, as expected, always stop in to visit us with a huge hug as they both have done all these years!
It was Sept. 11, 2001, the day before Taylor’s 65th birthday. We had checked into Greenwood Leflore Hospital, where he was scheduled to have the procedure to ease his trigger finger. For more than a year, his finger was making his hand uncomfortable unless he was fishing, gardening or mowing!
It was Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at 8:48 a.m. Eastern time, after terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes in a coordinated attack on the United States. Two planes struck the World Trade Center twin towers in New York City, another struck the Pentagon and another crashed in a Pennsylvania field. We heard this news while driving, but we thought “it’s history in world news,” (something that happened many years ago).
When we entered the hospital entrance, people were all standing and a few hovered over the television screen. While waiting to hear our name called, we decided to go ahead and ask what was happening. The entrance waiting room was in such an astounded atmosphere. The receptionist explained this is an ongoing tragedy and it’s really happening.
This was week two since our son Reginald had been in New York. He was not acquainted with New York City. He was there to complete his studies in the master’s degree program at the New School University.
Reginald was not able to call out and we could not reach him!
Fannie Morgan’s daughter and her husband live in New York, so we called her to make connections and we got in touch with the family.
They promised they would look into finding our son and for us not to worry, that they would get in touch with Reginald. A couple of hours later, they called to say they had reached Reginald and he was OK. We were grateful.
Reginald had told us about his first sightseeing visit to the twin towers the Sunday before. He doesn’t like recalling tragedy, but respects those families and individuals who will never forget this day.
As the nation reflects on this tragedy, we remember and honor those whose lives were lost. We think of those families who can and will never be forgotten. Each year we reminisce about the same story. Lest we forget 9/11. It’s been 25 years since the 9/11 attack. Certainly it doesn’t seem as if Reginald has lived in New York for 25 years! But that’s how we remember as time passes.
The new year 2026/2027 for church Sunday school classes begins with the month of September.
The year’s study will deepen your understanding of scripture with “We Have A Story to Tell.”
The International Standard Lesson for this quarter is: “Generations: From Canaan to Jerusalem.”
The quarter’s lessons look at ancient Israel’s entry into the Promised Land, follow Joshua’s leadership as the Israelites enter Canaan, consider Israel’s propensity to ignore God through the era of Judges, and examine Samuel’s pivotal role as he sets the stage for King David’s glorious reign.
It’s a good time to start or return to Sunday school and other Christian education classes. As you engage in class discussion, the hope is to experience the effects of applying the word to our daily lives. Welcome to Sunday morning church classes and worship services.
Kitchen tip: I tried this and, sure enough, it works! Rubbing a thin layer of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) onto a stainless steel appliance using a soft cloth will give it a clean streak-free shine and will create a barrier against fingerprints and water spots.
Enjoy life today.
