The Charleston Police Department recently took delivery of four Dodge Chargers to beef up the city's law enforcement cruiser force.
Two gray 2023 cars were purchased with a $50,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant Program and $23,000 in local matching funds. The USDA program provides grants to assist in the development of essential community facilities in rural areas and towns with populations up to 20,000, according to the program's webpage.
Two white 2013 cars were bought from the Tunica County Sheriff’s Department for $500 each.
"They run good," said Police Chief Kirby Griffin. "They will get us around for the next four or five years if we use them well. They're in good shape."
Griffin said the CPD has eight automobiles — cars, trucks and SUVs — for the force's five full-time officers, one part-time officer, an investigator and the chief.
