The Charleston Tigers and West Tallahatchie Choctaws posted strong performances in their respective regular-season finales Thursday night, providing some momentum for each team's push into the first round of the state playoffs next week.
After being tied 8 all at halftime, Charleston outscored Leflore County 24-6 in the final two quarters to take a 32-14 road win at Marcellus Singleton Stadium in Itta Bena.
The Tigers closed out the regular season with a record of 8-2 after winning their last four games and eight of nine following a narrow season-opening loss.
Thursday night's win also gave Charleston the outright Region 3-2A championship. A loss would have resulted in a three-way 3-1 tie with Simmons atop the regional standings that would have taken a points system to unscramble. Charleston's win rendered the matter moot as they finished a perfect 4-0 in region play.
West Tallahatchie exploded out of the gate for 18 first-quarter points before adding 16 more in the second period en route to a 42-6 blowout win over Leland at Choctaw Stadium in Webb.
The Choctaws ended the regular season with a 5-4 record after winning four of five games down the home stretch.
West Tally finished second in Region 5-1A standings behind undefeated Simmons.
In the postseason, the region champion and the runner-up get to host a first-round playoff game, which means both the Tigers and the Choctaws will be serving up some home cooking Friday night, Nov. 3.
Charleston will host the 4-7 Walnut Wildcats of Tippah County. Walnut finished as the fourth seed in Region 1-2A.
West Tally will host the 2-8 Leake County Gators of Walnut Grove. Leake County was the third seed in Region 7-1A.
