A car show will be held June 15 at George Cossar State Park in Oakland. Everyone is welcome to come. They will have vendors and they will have door prizes, so come and have fun and enjoy the day with old friends and make new ones.
Waylon and Holly Dukes are getting ready to move back into their home after a water hose behind the washing machine came loose and flooded their home while they were at work. They have been lodging with Waylon’s grandmother, Diane Dukes, while it is being repaired. They said it looks like a totally different home. It will probably be another week, but they are so excited that it’s almost ready to move back home.
Lila Myrick attended visitation for J.A. Hoop last Wednesday evening and visitation for Billy Meredith on Thursday at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Home. Freda and Frank Weir also attended both visitations.
This past weekend, our grandson, Brewer Deck of Cleveland, and our great-grandson, Bradley Holliday of Grenada, played baseball in the state tournament in Starkville. Both teams came up short, but I know they had a blast representing both of their teams.
As I write the news column this week, I am currently an inpatient at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. Your writer’s heart is in A-fib and they are planning on doing a procedure to put my heart back in a normal rhythm. My husband David and my daughter Donna have been here with me everyday. Bro. Ricky also came by for a visit. Sunday, my visitors were Brad, Frankie and Bradley Holliday. Sweet Bradley brought me a big 3 Musketeers candy bar. They brought Arby’s for lunch and we had a great time visiting. Frankie, of course, took care of me in between the nurses coming in and doing their rounds. It’s your writer’s opinion that she misses working in the hospital.
Martha Box said, “This wore-out girl took the week off and rested. I sat around, spent a lot of time on the porch drinking coffee, and listening to the birds singing! Did finally sleep well Friday night, which increased my energy a lot. Increased it so much I got up working at 6:30. Worked all day, then danced about!”
Martha said she went to Pine Grove Baptist Church Sunday morning. Her daughter, Ginger, had called to tell her Josh was singing, and sing he did! “Wow! Great music and a wonderful spirit-filled message from Bro. Truman Scarborough together floods our soul with the love of Jesus!” Martha noted.
Kirsti Daves and children Liam, Gracii and Fynlee visited with Lila and Freddie Wayne McClanahan and brought Lila a beautiful pot of yellow petunias. They also spent time with Bobby Joe McClanahan, Michelle, and Kenny Dunning.
Freddie Wayne and Jojo McClanahan visited Lila and Garry Myrick Saturday afternoon.
Area young people who are interested in starting and running their own community business in Oakland are invited to attend a meeting on Sunday, June 23, at 4 p.m. at the Oakland Area Chamber of Commerce office at 304 Holly Street. The interest level at the meeting will determine if the program moves forward. Parents and youths in grades 6-12 are invited. The vision is that the program will be youth-led with adult supervision. It is not necessary to live in Oakland to participate.
The Oakland Youth Collaborative (OYC) is an exciting program that offers area middle and high school students the opportunity to become entrepreneurs. Parents and youth will determine meeting times and work sessions. It is anticipated that students will have speakers who can help them generate business ideas, conduct market research, write business plans, pitch to a panel of investors, and launch a new business for Oakland. This program has the potential to impact the entire community.

Lemon Bars
One box angel food cake mix (just add water)
Lemon pie filling
Powdered sugar (optional)
Preheat oven to 350. Carefully fold the lemon pie filling into the angel food cake mix. Mixture will be light and fluffy. Spread mixture into a greased 9x13 baking dish and bake until golden brown. Once cooled, you may garnish with powdered sugar. Slice and enjoy!
