The 21st annual Birdia Keglar Legacy Day community celebration, in honor of the late local civil rights trailblazer from Charleston, will be held this Saturday, June 6, in her hometown.
According to advance publicity from the Birdia Keglar Legacy Committee, the day will begin with a “drum call to the community” on the Charleston courthouse lawn at 10 a.m.
During the morning session, city, county and state speakers are expected to present statements, and an array of entertainment will be featured, including youth dance performances and instrumental and vocal renditions.
A cavalcade from Court Square to New Town Missionary Baptist Church will usher in an afternoon program featuring reflections on the commitment of Keglar and likeminded pioneers in Charleston and Tallahatchie County to enhancing opportunities for people of color, particularly in the area of voter registration.
A voter education presentation, the awarding of the Birdia Keglar Legacy Scholarship, entertainment, trivia, giveaways and lunch will also be part of the day.
All are invited “to attend and continue to connect and collaborate, recognizing the challenges that our communities face,” said Gwen Dailey.
