Fireworks and a ball drop will be part of the festivities surrounding a New Year’s Eve celebration in Charleston this Sunday night, according to Mayor Sedrick Smith Sr.
The event will be conducted on the Charleston Court Square, largely in the area in front of City Hall, the mayor noted.
“We will have an awesome fireworks show,” Smith said.
Charleston’s New Year’s Eve celebration will start at 11 p.m., he added.
The fireworks show will begin at 11:45.
The countdown to the ball drop will get underway just before midnight, Smith noted, culminating at 12 o’clock when 2023 gives way to the new year of 2024.
Charleston police remind the public that there is a zero tolerance policy for anyone discharging a firearm in the city at any time, including as a celebratory gesture on New Year's Eve.
Per city ordinance, discharging a firearm within the corporate limits is a misdemeanor offense punishable by a fine of up to $500 for the first violation and/or up to 90 days in jail. Conviction on a second violation basically doubles those penalties.
