CLEVELAND — Tallahatchie County native Tayler Berryhill has been selected to play for the Mississippi team in the upcoming Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Boys Basketball Game.
Berryhill, senior point guard for the Cleveland Central High School Wolves, is the son of Tiffany Berryhill and former West Tallahatchie High School boys basketball head coach Bernard Berryhill.
Coach Berryhill, who led West Tally’s Choctaws to a 2A state championship and 34-0 overall record during the 2015-16 season, now coaches his All-Star son and Wolves team at Cleveland Central in Bolivar County.
“As his father, I’m extremely proud of and excited for him,” said Bernard. “As his coach, witnessing the countless gym hours, observing and assisting him in his workouts, I’m thankful that his work didn’t go unnoticed.”
The coach said his son knows that “without his teammates ... none of this would be possible,” adding, “Though this is an individual honor, he proudly represents the boys basketball program and supporters of Cleveland Central High School.”
Tayler, the grandson of Lucinda Berryhill of Tutwiler and of the late Clifton Bailey of Webb, has averaged 15 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4 assists and one steal, and has shot 75% from the free throw line for the Wolves this season. As of Tuesday, the team held a cumulative record of 21-8 and sat in third place in Class 5A’s Region 2.
The Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Boys Basketball Game will tip off at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in A.E. Wood Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi College in Clinton. The All-Star girls' game starts at noon that day.
