The peacefulness of an east Charleston residential neighborhood was shattered about noon Saturday when a man walking by on the street allegedly pulled a gun and opened fire on two women and a girl sitting on a porch.
Charleston Police Chief Justin Gammage said Marlon R. Diltz, 39, of 614 N. Vine St., Charleston, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault at 12:26 p.m.
Diltz was transported to the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Tutwiler but was released on Tuesday after posting bond of $2,000, according to a spokesperson at the Tallahatchie County Jail in Charleston.
The shooting occurred on East Gay Street near Charleston Elementary School, where a woman told police that she, her daughter and her sister were sitting on the front porch of her home when a pedestrian started shooting in their direction. No one was injured.
Gammage said officers recovered two spent casings but did not find any bullet holes in the exterior of the house.
Based on a description of the man provided by the mother, police took Diltz into custody at the nearby Mr. Jiffy convenience store. According to the arrest report, Diltz was drunk and drinking at the time but did not resist.
The woman later provided a positive identification.
Gammage said Diltz was found to be in possession of a handgun when he was apprehended by police.
“The firearm was the same caliber as the shells that were found at the scene [of the shooting],” the chief noted, without identifying the caliber.
Gammage said police have determined no motive in the case, adding, “It’s still an ongoing investigation.”
