A Cascilla man was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-vehicle crash in the Paynes community Monday night.
Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly identified the victim as Roy Hayden Smith Jr., 40, of 472 Smith Road.
Fly said Smith was the apparent driver of a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck traveling northbound on Highway 35 shortly after 8 p.m.
The sheriff said the vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole and overturned near the intersection of Highway 35 and Brown Road.
He noted that personnel and equipment from the Charleston Fire and Rescue Department and the Murphreesboro and Paynes volunteer fire departments responded to the scene. Emergency workers had to use hydraulic rescue tools to free Smith from the wreckage, Fly said.
A passenger in the vehicle, identified as Eric Heafner of Panola County, was uninjured in the accident, Fly noted, adding that he did not know whether seat belts were used by either occupant.
He said the Mississippi Highway Patrol is handling the official investigation.
