Officials gathered Oct. 10 to conduct a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Tallahatchie County Safe Room in Charleston.
The facility, to be located at 185 S. Market St., in the old SuperValu parking lot, is designed to protect up to 544 people from wind speeds up to 250 mph.
Hooker Construction Co. of Pontotoc has the nearly $1.52 million contract to build the structure, which is expected to be completed by May 2020.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded Tallahatchie County an almost $1.48 million grant toward the project’s $1.64 million total cost. The county is providing 10% of the cost through in-kind work and other considerations.
