SUMNER — Despite potentially wet weather, Sumner Mayor Jackson Webb said plans for Sunday night’s annual Christmas Eve fireworks show in his town are continuing “full speed ahead.”
Webb made the remark on Tuesday, at a time when the National Weather Service Memphis forecast office cited an 80% chance of “showers and possibly a thunderstorm” in Tallahatchie County on the night of Dec. 24.
The takeaway: Don’t forget the umbrella. And with a forecast low of 55, remember your jacket, too.
The show is scheduled to start at 7. Don’t worry; it will end long before Santa and his reindeer come flying through this part of the country.
Fireworks will be launched from the Cassidy Bayou bridge in the heart of town, and the display can best be viewed from the streets along the bayou north of the bridge.
The bridge will be closed to traffic starting at 6:45 p.m. Because regulations require that the public be kept a safe distance from the bridge during the show, boundaries will be established on both sides of the span, explained Sumner Town Clerk Toni Clark.
The public is asked to respect boundary markers and to remain outside marked areas, Clark said.
The event, an annual project of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department, is funded entirely through private donations.
“This is a community effort, so if anyone would like to donate, they can do so by making checks out to the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department and dropping them off with Toni Clark at the town hall,” the mayor noted.
As usual, the holiday light show will be orchestrated and executed by professional technicians from LaFollette, Tennessee-based Pyro Shows.
Some local residents also use the occasion to light and launch dozens of Chinese lanterns, adding to the spectacle on Cassidy Bayou.
