Will Democratic gubernatorial nominee Brandon Presley get to see his Tallahatchie County wife become first lady of the state of Mississippi come January?
This and other questions will be answered in Tuesday’s Nov. 7 general election or, possibly, in a Nov. 28 runoff.
Presley, who has served four terms as Northern District public service commissioner, wed Charleston native Katelyn Mabus in August.
The couple have been campaigning around the state in his bid to unseat Republican incumbent Gov. Tate Reeves, who is seeking a second term.
Whether any candidate will receive the required outright majority of the vote is questionable, because the name of independent candidate Gwendolyn Gray will also be on the ballot. Gray withdrew from the race Oct. 9 and threw her support behind Presley. However, the State Board of Election Commissioners had already certified the ballot in September and could not remove her name. If neither candidate receives a majority, the top two vote-getters will advance to the runoff.
Eight other state or area state district incumbents face a general election challenge.
One Tallahatchie County officeholder, and the Democratic nominee for another post, also have Nov. 7 opposition.
Democratic incumbent District 3 Supervisor Larry Cole will face a challenge from Republican Justin Booth.
Anthony “Tony” Hawkins, who in August defeated incumbent Coroner Ginger Meriwether for the Democratic nomination, will meet independent candidate Angela “Angie” Peters Davis.
County circuit clerk offices in Charleston and Sumner, as well as all others around the state, will be open from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Nov. 4, for the last day of in-person absentee balloting for the Nov. 7 election.
