Finally, with the Sept. 9 qualifying deadline looming large, there has been a show of interest in two school board seats that will be on some Tallahatchie County ballots in November.
While no one has filed qualifying papers, Circuit Clerk Daphane Neal said Tuesday that “a few [people] have picked up the packet” featuring required forms.
The qualifying period opened Aug. 10, and the deadline to file as a candidate for school board is 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9.
Members of the East and West Tallahatchie school districts’ five-member boards of trustees serve staggered five-year terms, with one seat in each district coming up for election every fall.
The Nov. 8 general election will feature trustee posts in Education District 2, a seat on the West Tallahatchie School District Board of Trustees held by Marvin F. George, and Education District 7, a slot on the East Tallahatchie School District Board of Trustees currently occupied by Tameka McIntyre.
Although there is no qualifying fee for school board, candidates must file a Qualifying Statement of Intent and submit a petition that bears the signatures of at least 50 registered voters who live within their respective education district.
Properly formatted petition forms are available from the circuit clerk’s offices in Charleston and Sumner.
