Santrail Hunt-Kuykendall defeated fellow Charlestonian James “Honey” Johnson in Tuesday’s special election, retaining her seat on the East Tallahatchie School District Board of Trustees.
Hunt-Kuykendall led Johnson 119-55 after machine-fed ballots were counted Tuesday night from Charleston 1, 2 and 3, and Spring Hill precincts.
After 18 absentee and two affidavit ballots were added later, Hunt-Kuykendall’s final victory in the Education District 7 race was by a count of 125-67.
Tuesday's voting was a court-ordered do-over of November 2022 balloting that resulted in a challenge filed by Johnson over alleged voting irregularities. A special judge presided over a court hearing, finding that multiple problems existed and ordering that a new election be held.
