Former longtime state Rep. Tommy Reynolds won a Tuesday special election for mayor of Water Valley, a city of about 3,351 residents..
His 599 votes accounted for 71% of those cast in the election. Ron Hart posted 183 and Terry Rockette 64, according to unofficial results cited by the North Mississippi Herald Tuesday night.
Former Water Valley Mayor Donald Gray resigned at the end of 2023 to assume his new elected position as chancery clerk of Yalobusha County, prompting the special election.
Reynolds will serve the remaining 16 months of Gray’s four-year term.
The 69-year-old Reynolds and his wife, Liz, live in Water Valley. Both are native Tallahatchians.
The Democrat represented District 33 in the Mississippi House of Representatives for 44 years before deciding not to seek a 12th term in 2023. That district included portions of Tallahatchie and Yalobusha counties, among others.
Reynolds continues to own and operate a law office in Charleston.
He serves as attorney for the city of Charleston and the Tallahatchie County Board of Supervisors.
