A 65th Tallahatchian has died as a result of COVID-19, the Mississippi State Department of Health has revealed in a weekly report.
MSDH noted that the local victim was among eight COVID-related deaths statewide occurring from Dec. 4-17 and identified from death certificate reports.
Seven other Mississippians died Dec. 15-29 due to COVID, the Health Department added.
The recent death of a Tallahatchie countian due to the virus was the first reported since late August.
The most recent weekly report of county-by-county data, released by MSDH Jan. 2, shows there have been 7,963 total cases of Tallahatchie County residents testing positive for COVID.
The first positive case of the virus in Tallahatchie was reported by MSDH on March 23, 2020. The first local death was announced on April 17, 2020.
Statewide since March 2020, there have been 960,923 positive cases and 13,112 deaths linked to the pandemic.
For the one-week period from Dec. 27 to Jan. 3, MSDH announced 5,778 additional positive cases of COVID-19 in the state.
The number of outbreaks in long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes, personal care homes and assisted living centers, rose from 107 to 149 during the week. A single confirmed COVID-19 infection in an LTC facility resident or employee is considered an outbreak.
