Former Charleston High School football standout DeAntre Prince showed up and showed out at the NFL Scouting Combine last week in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The annual event is touted by the NFL as “a unique and pivotal step in the prospect journey from amateur athlete to NFL Pro. At Combine, 300+ of the best college football players are given the stage to showcase their skills in front of coaches, GMs, and scouts. This key stop before the NFL draft is a chance for players to elevate their football profiles and showcase their talents to clubs and fans across the country before finding their new teams.”
A total of 321 NFL draft prospects were invited to attend this year’s event, which featured a variety of interviews and drills over a five-day period. Defensive back workouts were on Friday, March 1.
Prince, a 6-0, 183-pound senior cornerback, helped the Ole Miss Rebels to their first-ever 11-win season in 2023. He then played in the East-West Shrine Bowl, a premier all-star game for NFL draft prospects.
Prince put up some impressive numbers at the Combine.
At 4.38 seconds, Prince tied for the fifth-fastest 40-yard dash time among the more than 40 defensive backs participating in the workout.
Even more notable, according to a Sports Illustrated graphic, is the fact that Prince led all Combine prospects this year when he ran the 10-yard split in just 1.47 seconds.
The drill measures how fast a prospect can cover the first 10 yards of their 40.
“The 10-yard split is the 40-yard dash’s younger sibling,” SI noted. “Less popular, but important in its own way as it is more focused on a player’s ability to start rather than showcase their top speed.”
In other measurements, Prince achieved 34.5 inches in the vertical jump and 10 feet, 5 inches in the broad jump.
His mother, JacQueline “Jackie” Prince of Charleston, wrote in a Facebook post, “Proud is not even the word.”
Prince is projected as a fourth-round draft pick by some NFL analysts.
