Tomorrow, history may be repeating itself for the Charleston High School track program.
In 2023, the CHS boys and girls swept the Class 2A North State Track and Field Championships, with both winning first-place trophies at the meet in Potts Camp. It was said to have marked the first time in program history that the two squads won north half championships during the same season.
Charleston stands an excellent chance to make it two in a row during this year's 2A North State meet, Saturday, April 27, at Winona High School.
After the CHS boys and girls both swept their recent regional 2A track meet, they did the same at the 1-2A Super Regional last week at Winona.
On the women's side of the 1-2A Super Regional, Charleston's Lady Tigers scored 242.50 points to far outdistance second-place finisher East Union Attendance Center's 156. M.S. Palmer was third with 50.50, Calhoun City fourth with 50, Water Valley fifth with 37.50, Walnut Attendance sixth with 37, Bruce seventh with 29, Ingomar eighth with 27.50 and Hamilton last with 21.
On the men's side of the 1-2A Super Regional, the Charleston Tigers tallied 218 team points with an even greater distance between themselves and second-place finisher East Union, at 101.50. M.S. Palmer was third with 90, Calhoun City fourth with 67, Hamilton fifth with 52.50, Walnut sixth with 51, Water Valley seventh with 50, Ingomar eighth with 11 and Bruce last with 5.
Charleston's boys and girls took first place in 23 of the 34 events in which they participated, finishing second in three others.
Full meet results can be seen on the MileSplit Mississippi website.
After tomorrow's meet at Winona, next up will be the Mississippi High School Activities Association State Track and Field Championships, Monday, May 6, at Pearl High School.
The Lady Tigers will be hoping to repeat their dominating 2023 state championship performance, while the Tigers will look to build on their fifth-place state finish among the 30 male teams at last year's meet.
