WEBB — West Tallahatchie High School athletes will compete in 11 events during the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 1A Track and Field State Championships Monday (May 5) at the Woody Barnett Track and Field Complex at Pearl High School.
The Choctaws have never won a team state title in the sport of track and field.
Conversely, the West Tally Lady Choctaws have won three track and field state championships, including back-to-back state titles in 1997 and 1998, and another state title in 2001. The school was classified in Class 2A at that time.

In competition at the MHSAA Class 1A South State Track Meet April 26 at Arrow Field on the campus of Clinton High School, the Lady Choctaws competed in five events and the Choctaws participated in nine.
At that meet, the following West Tally athletes finished in the top four places in their respective events to qualify for the MHSAA State Championships:
Girls
» 4x100-meter relay team (meet results did not list individual team athletes for WTHS in this event): first place, 52.04
» 400-meter dash: Kydesha Washington, fourth place, 1:06.95
» Triple jump: Mi’Kenzi Christian, fourth place, 30-05.50
» Discus throw: Mariah Christian, fourth place, 75-09
Boys
» High jump: Jayden Sample, first place, 5-10.00; Ronnie Franklin, third place, 5-08.00
» Triple jump: A.J. Pimpton, first place, 42-10.75; Jayden Sample, second place, 41-03.50
» 1,600-meter run: Michael Bailey, third place, 5:10.64
» 3,200-meter run: Michael Bailey, third place, 12:35.12
» 300-meter hurdles: Jalin Lewis, third place, 43.10
» 200-meter dash: Jamerius Johnson, fourth place, 23.36
» Shot put: Cameron Christian, fourth place, 40-01.50

Sophomore Jayden Sample, who won a gold medal in the high jump and a silver in the triple jump at last year’s state meet, will be competing in those same events again on Monday.
