Lawmakers are debating financial literacy requirements at Mississippi colleges and universities as the session winds down.
As the Legislature is considering a bill that would mandate all post-secondary institutions in the state provide some sort of financial literacy education, the Board of Trustees for the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning has adopted a policy to that effect.
The new financial literacy policy was adopted as part of the discussion of academic affairs during Thursday’s meeting.

Bark beetles threaten

RAYMOND, Miss. -- Mississippi State University Extension Service forestry specialists are encouraging timberland owners to keep a watchful eye on their property for signs of bark beetles and disease after January’s ice storm.
Of Mississippi’s five species of bark beetles, the three species of Ips engraver beetles and southern pine beetles, or SPB, raise the most concern. Black turpentine beetles are not as common or as deadly and are of least concern.

Mississippi State University’s 2026 Watermelon Field Day is set for July 22 at the R.R. Foil Plant Science Research Center, commonly known as North Farm. Registration is free through March 31 and will cost $50 per person starting April 1.

From lowering the years of service to setting aside funds for a COLA for the new Tier 5, the Mississippi Senate continues the push for its preferred PERS changes.
The Mississippi Senate passed a strike-all amendment earlier this week to a House bill in an effort to revive its reforms to the Public Employees Retirement System, or PERS.
The Senate amendment places language from its six bills that have died this session into a House bill as the chamber again seeks to address changes in PERS.
