Foul play is not suspected in last week’s death of a Vermont inmate being held at the private prison in Tutwiler, according to Tallahatchie County Coroner Anthony Hawkins.
The deceased, identified as Shawn Sears, was a 56-year-old Vermont Department of Corrections (VDOC) inmate housed at the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility.

Union members with the Pascagoula Metal Trades Council approved a new collective bargaining agreement with Ingalls Shipbuilding on Tuesday, securing the largest pay raise for workers in the shipyard’s history.
PMTC includes 9 of the 13 unions at Ingalls Shipbuilding and represents nearly 6,000 of the shipyard’s workers. The contract was approved with 1,832 members supporting the agreement and 391 voting against it.

Carpenter Pole and Piling is expanding in Wiggins with a corporate investment of nearly $5 million. The announcement came Wednesday from the Mississippi Development Authority.

Federal and state disaster assistance officials arrived back in Tallahatchie County early this week to offer a variety of services to victims of January’s ice storm, and this time they will be staying longer.
As during an almost weeklong stay in mid-May, Federal Emergency Management Agency and Small Business Administration officials are operating at the Tallahatchie County Safe Room, 185 S. Market St. in Charleston — directly behind Bank of Commerce — where they invite visits by the public.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Jordan III ordered that any of the defendants wanting to plead guilty have until May 29. All three previously plead not guilty in November 2024 following their indictment.

Attala County Schools will once again provide free meals to children this summer through its annual Summer Food Service Program, ensuring students have access to nutritious food while school is out of session.
The program will operate June 1 through June 25, Monday through Thursday, at two locations across the county. Children participating in the program will receive both breakfast and lunch each day.
Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., followed by lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Meals will be available at Ethel High School and McAdams High School.

Local performers will have a chance to step into the spotlight when the Kosciusko Attala Partnership (KAP) Chamber of Commerce hosts a karaoke competition during the Central Mississippi Fair on June 6.
The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Attala County Coliseum and is open to singers of all experience levels. Organizers say the competition is designed to highlight community talent while providing a high-energy evening of entertainment.

Cedar Grove M.B. Church in Sallis will hold a pastor appreciation program at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7.
The program will celebrate Pastor Osie Grays’ 33 years of leadership. The public is invited.
North Union sets homecoming service
North Union Baptist Church will hold homecoming services at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 7.
Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish and join the church for worship and lunch. An offering will be collected for the upkeep of North Union Cemetery.
