Communities flourish when all their children can learn in an environment well-suited to their individual needs.
I am a former public school teacher of more than 30 years and a member of the school board in the Florida county where I live. Public schooling is in my blood; I am a product of our public schools and I’m very proud of the many, many students who’ve benefited from the public schools where I grew up and taught.

Hyder L. Johnson 1936-2026
Hyder L. Johnson, 89, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. '
Born August 28, 1936, in Tillar, he lived a life deeply rooted in faith and service. He was a devoted member of Loggy Bayou M.B. Church and later New St. Hurricane Baptist Church. Hyder graduated from Wolf Project High School, earned degrees from A.M.&N. College (UAPB) and Texas Southern University, and honorably served in the U.S. Army as a bacteriologist.

Laura Love Goodson Leek 1961-2026
, Dumas High School students and staff colored a butterfly tribute in honor of the memory of Mrs. Laura Leek, a beloved memory of the school community. Participants were invited to color butterflies and write personal notes or cherished memories on the back. The butterflies have been displayed in the hallway as a visual memorial. The butterflies will be presented to the family later
The tribute represents the lasting impact Mrs. Leek had on our students and staff. The butterflies symbolize transformation, hope and the way she influence continues to guide and inspire us.
Laura Love Goodson Leek, 64, of McGehee, AR, passed away on February 10, 2026. She was born on September 19, 1961 to the late Larry and Betty Love.
Laura’s students at DHS were one of our most prized gifts in life. She cared for them and loved them as if they were her own children. She saw her position as a teacher as an opportunity to change a young person’s life and make them feel loved. Every student that she crossed paths with truly made every single day fulfilled.
