Earlene Johnson McBride
Earlene Johnson McBride, affectionately known as “Nanaw” to many of those who loved her, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on April 8, 2026, at the age of 78. Waiting to welcome her at Heaven’s gates was her beloved husband, Gary Leigh McBride, who preceded her in death. Together, they built a foundation of love and faith that will continue to guide their family for generations.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, May 8, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Culpepper Funeral Home in Kosciusko.

Deborah Tanksley, 69, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at her home in Union.
Funeral Services are Saturday, May 2, 2026 at 11:00 am at Culpepper Funeral Home in Kosciusko. Visitation is 9:00 am until 11:00 am prior to the service. Danny Stewart will officiate the service.
Deborah is survived by her daughter April Petty, brothers Bobby Hodge and Charlie Hodge, grandchildren Dakota Page (Ansley), Destiny Petty, and Crystal Mabry (Quinton), and great-grandchildren Ava, Ashton, Bentley, and TK.

Former Weir official sentenced in child exploitation case

A former interim mayor and longtime alderman of Weir has been sentenced after pleading guilty to a felony child exploitation charge in Choctaw County Circuit Court.
Seabern “Doug” Atkinson, 73, entered a guilty plea in the case of State of Mississippi v. Atkinson according to court records.

Garden Club program highlights history, revival of carousel venue

The April Meeting of the Little Garden Club was held at The Carousel House in downtown Kosciusko with Melissa Boswell Townsend giving a delightful program on the history of the merry-go-round and venue. In 2021, Mrs. Townsend purchased the former Hammond Hardware building. After much success with The Guitar Academy and Bed & Breakfast in that space, she began concentrating on the warehouse, which happened to house a carousel.
