The public is told often that too many adults have left the American work force. By one measurement — probably the most important one, the percentage of adults who are working — this is true.
But there are other ways to look at this, and Douglas Holtz-Eakin of the American Action Forum research group pointed them out recently in his daily economics email.
The labor force participation rate, which is the percentage of Americans who have a job, has declined. It actually has been declining since 2000, when it peaked at 67%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Instead of grousing about the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that discouraged states from considering race in setting political district lines, Southern Democrats need to take the next step and figure out what to do about it.
The answer is obvious, and well set out on The Bulwark website: Start moving toward the middle of the political spectrum to appeal to more voters.

The family photo of Billy Elmore has always haunted me. It pops up every now and then as my computer screen rotates through thousands of stored photos.
He is a handsome lad in his twenties with a long face and a serious demeanor.
I am probably the only person left in the world who can recognize him. He died in World War II in 1942 and left no children. He was my great-uncle. My mother’s mother’s brother.

When a man who saved six billion dollars for Mississippi ratepayers talks, it’s a good idea to listen.
Now this man is trying to save trillions of dollars for Louisiana. We need to listen.
When the $7.6 billion Kemper power plant was being hyped, it was Kelley Williams who said the emperor had no clothes. He was ignored. But he persisted. Persistence, along with unusual intelligence combined with common sense, is one of Kelley’s many great traits.
