Every year has its challenges and this one is no different. On the opposite page, Jonathan Kettler writes about the start of 1949 and all the challenges faced that year. It provides a real sense of perspective.
The Sun is a community newspaper so we like to focus on local news but the decimation of local news by Big Tech has caused more focus on national and international news. It is human nature to focus on what’s there.

Voters deserve to know who they are entrusting with leadership. My story is not about titles or accolades—it’s about preparation, service, and a lifelong commitment to doing the work required to serve others well.
Leadership expert John Maxwell says, “On any given day, we are a sum of our life experiences.” I believe that wholeheartedly. Every morning, I wake up with purpose, knowing that every step I have taken—personally and professionally—has prepared me to lead our Sheriff’s Office and help lead our County with integrity and accountability.

Few entities have had a bigger effect on Arkansas than Walmart, and this year the effect was bigger than most. For that reason, philanthropist Alice Walton, daughter of founder Sam Walton, and retiring CEO Doug McMillon are the Arkansans of the Year.
Every December, this column bestows that title on an individual or individuals who have most impacted the state. It is inspired by Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” designation for “the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year.”
