Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Saturday, January 3, at True Bible Way Church in Clarksdale.

CASCILLA — Rivers Virginia Kendall Franklin, age 91, of Cascilla, passed away Friday, January 16, in Grenada.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 19, at The North Church (formerly North Shady Grove Church of God). Interment will follow in the North Shady Grove Cemetery. McKibben and Guinn Funeral Services has charge of arrangements.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. E.M. Franklin; a daughter, Tony Rideout; and three sons, Max Franklin, Earl Franklin and Perry Franklin.

SUMNER — Barbara Berry Newton, age 76, retired coordinator for Ruleville Manufacturing, passed away Friday, Jan. 16, at her home.
Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sumner. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale has charge of arrangements.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C.F. Newton; and her parents, Jesse and Dorothy Taunton Berry.

The annual Tallahatchie County Livestock Show will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Tallahatchie County Fairgrounds near Charleston.
The event, sponsored by the Tallahatchie County 4-H Livestock Club, is free for the public to attend.
A concession stand will be available, and proceeds from the sale of all concessions will go to benefit the local 4-H livestock club.

The Charleston High School and M.S. Palmer High School bands are scheduled to participate in Charleston’s 18th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade on Monday, Jan. 19.
Also set to show up and show out is Flawless, a group of young steppers from Charleston.
This year’s King Day parade, whose theme is “We are stronger when working in unity,” is scheduled to get underway at noon.
Lineup will begin at 11 a.m., on Walnut Street behind Charleston City Hall.

The children are settled back in school and things are back to normal. Those few days of warm weather lasted long enough for them to enjoy being outside.
Diane Dukes had friends from Virginia visit her Monday afternoon. Rickey Nations and his wife Vickie had a good visit. They wanted to know if Diane wanted to go to Greenville and stay for three days, but she had to pass them up.

GLENDORA — The Emmett Till Historic Intrepid Center (ETHIC) here has added a new 14-member board of directors, experts with local and national connections, after recently hiring Dr. Sharon Hill as executive director.
Glendora Mayor Johnny B. Thomas, who founded the ETHIC in 2005 and has since led several successful grant efforts to grow and maintain the site, has been named honorary board member.

Formerly of Charleston, her family the Roberson Hardware store.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Knott of Jacksonville, N.C.; her daughters, Mary Helmkamp of Cary, N.C. and Becca Abeyounis of Leland, N.C.; her son, Mikey Knott of Seattle, Wash.; four sisters, a brother and two grandchildren.

CASCILLA — Tom Henry Kendall, age 86, of Cascilla, peacefully passed away Friday, January 9, surrounded by family who loved him deeply.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 12, at North Shady Grove Church of God with Rev. Jason Smith and Rev. Mark Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the North Shady Grove Cemetery. The family will received friends from 5–7 p.m. Sunday evening and one hour prior to the service Monday, all at the church.

He is survived by his daughter, Brittiany Ann Martin of Denham Springs, Louisiana; his parents, Robert “Buddy” Charles and Judy Martin of Enid; two brothers, and a sister.

Marqual Antavius Harris
A Tallahatchie County man was flown to a Memphis hospital Monday night (Jan. 5) with injuries sustained in an auto crash after reportedly leading lawmen on a high-speed chase in parts of two counties.
Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly said Marqual Antavius Harris, 36, of 1285 Johnson Dr., Enid, was listed in critical condition Tuesday morning (Jan. 6) at The Med.
Harris was alone in a 2010 Ford F-150 pickup when it crashed at the intersection of Paul-Shady Grove and Tallaha roads at 8:23 p.m. Monday, Fly stated.

The Beauty of Joy in Dry Places
Through the prophet Isaiah (35:1-10), God said that the parched desert will be made fertile. The wild places will display a type of beauty never seen before. God, who is the beginning of substance, assures believers that there will be abundance where there is no expectation of increase.
The literal idea of finding beautiful plants in the desert is encouraging. Yet, more encouraging is the analogy of a spiritual desert suddenly bursting forth with beauty.
