TUTWILER — In the wake of two unrelated shooting deaths here within a span of 14 days, the Tutwiler Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday to establish new curfews in an effort to tamp down late-night interaction that could lead to violence.
Tutwiler Police Department Investigator Casey Lewis said early Wednesday that an 11 p.m. curfew has been imposed for residents 18 and over, while an 8 p.m. curfew is in effect for anyone 17 and under.
Both the March 15 and March 29 killings occurred shortly after midnight, and everyone cited in the cases has been 18 or older.

Not much information exists yet on National Native Plant Month because it is a brand new designation.
The first Senate resolution was in 2021 to make April National Native Plant Month and recognize “the benefits of native plants to the environment and economy of the United States.”
This year, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) has once again agreed to be the lead sponsor of the Senate resolution with Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) once again the bipartisan cosponsor.

Saturday’s March 28 ceremony dedicating the running track and field at Charleston High School to a former longtime local coach, Craig Walker, was very fitting and richly deserved.
For many years, Walker was the physical education teacher and track and football coach at Charleston Middle School, but he may be most widely known as the founder, fundraiser, driver and coach of a summer youth track and field program that captured the attention of people far from Tallahatchie County and Mississippi.

What does the holy-warrior culture Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is cultivating in our military have in common with the holy-militant culture Imperial Wizard Sam Bowers cultivated in his White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan?
I fell into this question after reading Hegseth’s latest militant prayer and then about the trove of Klan artifacts uncovered at the Mississippi Department of Public Safety as it prepared to relocate. Among the items recovered were a Klan charter and a March 1, 1964, Bowers lecture. (See all items at Jackson Jambalaya.)

We had a horrendous happening here in our little close-knit town this past weekend. So unspeakable that my pacifist mind and spirit have trouble comprehending. Two innocent people in our community were shot to death needlessly.
Of course, Facebook lit up almost as quickly as it happened as this has become mine and it seems, everyone else’s, standard way of getting up-to-the-minute news, and the news hit our town with terror and fear.
